What I can say is that the trajectory has been steeper than most people, including us, predicted three years ago. GPT-4 surprised even us in some capabilities. 03:00 - Lex: What keeps you up at night about AI safety? 03:15 - Sam: The thing I worry most about is that we get alignment mostly right but not completely right, and we do not realize it until it matters. The gap between 99% aligned and 100% aligned could be enormous in consequences. 06:00 - Sam: We are spending a huge amount of resources on alignment research. I think it is the most important technical problem of our time. More important than capabilities research, honestly. 09:00 - Lex: How do you think about the economic disruption? 09:15 - Sam: Jobs will change. Some will disappear. New ones will be created that we can not imagine yet. I think the transition will be faster than previous technological shifts, which means we need to think about policy now, not later. 12:00 - Sam: My hope is that AI makes the cost of intelligence approach zero, the way solar is making the cost of energy approach zero. When intelligence is abundant and cheap, incredible things become possible for everyone.
